Punt Class is a punting class progression designed to teach the basic mechanics of punting a football. Punt Class has four sections. It is necessary to take the classes in sequence to learn experience the sequenced teaching drills that translate into good punting skills.
There is a 3-4 week training period in between each class where the punters must practice the drills from the class and improve the fundamentals that they learned.
Punt Class 1 teaches the punter the Core Drills which need to be practiced daily. They are: Quick Feet Drill, Quick Feet Leg Swing Drill, Quick Feet Up Drill and Ball Release Drill. The punters are filmed and critiqued in each drill to denote good techniques and the techniques which need improvement for the next class.
Punt Class 2 reinforces the Core Drills and then instructs the punter in the Ball Catch Drill, Ball Handling Drill, and the Ball Contact Drill. Emphasis in this session is placed on maintaining the proper drill mechanics when striking the football. Punters will punt in a net and be filmed to denote proper and improper ball striking mechanics.
Punt Class 3 is designed to train the punter to understand the proper body position at ball contact and the height of ball contact. Emphasis is on consistent ball striking and control of ball contact. Drills that are used to teach this are Partner Ball Catch Drill, Through-the-Goal Post Drill and Hang Time Drill. It is preferred to do this class outdoors but with a net and filming this can successfully be taught indoors also. A test of 10 punts is done to denote average handling times, average punt distance and average hang time.
Punt Class 4 teaches the punter to perform a variety of punts including the hang time punt, the field punt, the spiral punt, the directional left punt, the directional right punt and the drive punt.
